Overthinking, self-care can help

Overthinking can cause a lot of stress and distress in our lives. It mostly leads to negative thoughts.

Here are some signs that you are an overthinker.

  1. You play out dire scenarios in your head, ignoring or tuning out those around you.

  2. You go into comparison, not realising you may be comparing your limits to someone else's strength.

  3. When you overthink, you over plan your life, which in turn leads to overwhelm.

Overthinking rarely brings happiness, or peaceful joyful thoughts, and the negative thoughts drive the stress in our bodies.

Replaying a conversation in your head or a problem someone shared is a classic example of overthinking and we are all guilty of it.

It is unlikely that you will stop overthinking completely, however you can choose what is worth your while overthinking, other people's issues are definitely not that.

When you feel out of control with your thoughts, self-care is something you have control over. So nurture yourself, do something you enjoy meet joyful people, the more you practise this, the more you are training your mind to focus on the positive.

Here are some other ways that you can take control of your overthinking.

1.Find a distraction.

Distractions help you forget what's bothering you, a temporary distraction is often what's needed for you to relax your mind. A few things you can do are:

-Watch a fun movie.
-Exercise.
-Read a book.
-Learn a new hobby, such as knitting or crocheting.

This can be hard to start, but you can give yourself a time limit and before you know it you will be in another world.

2.Write it down.

All those problems that are going around in your head, write them down. Decide which one needs your immediate attention and work on that one. The focus is then on just one thing and will lower your stress levels and the feeling of overwhelm.

3.Accept the past.

There is no possible way to change the past and accepting it doesn't mean that the traumatic events didn't happen, as you can't go back accepting those thoughts and memories have huge health benefits.
